How To Choose A Day Care Service

Barry Ward

Selecting a daycare is an overwhelming experience for any parent. The thought of entrusting your child to other people seems scary. Yet, sooner or later, a parent has to make this critical decision. When looking for daycare services, you will have to zero in on an ideal childcare center. The following question can ease your selection process.

How Are the Facilities and Amenities?

As a general rule, take time to inspect the facilities and amenities at the daycare center. You will want to assess whether the center has enough space and facilities to offer quality daycare services. Also, check if the center has separate areas for children of different ages. In addition, consider whether the layout is safe and ideal for crawling and playing. Besides the internal environment, check out if there is an open ground for outdoor activities. Notably, evaluate the level of cleanliness at the center. Lastly, conduct a safety and security assessment, including structural integrity, surveillance systems, and age-appropriate materials.

What Is the Teacher-Child Ratio?

The quality of daycare services largely depends on the teacher-child ratio. In particular, children below the age of two require a teacher-child ratio of 1:3-6. On the other hand, those above 2 years need a ratio of 1:6-10 for quality of interaction. Thus, a very big child group size compared to the caregivers will lead to an overcrowded, noisy, and unsafe setting. Hence, you should ask the center to inform you about the teacher-child ratio as an indicator for quality daycare services. More so, visit the center for a physical observation.

How Is the Center Schedule Like?

The daycare schedule will affect your convenience and child wellness. Thus, inquire about the daycare operation hours and days. In this case, confirm the specific drop-off and pick-up time. Also, determine if and when the daycare center closes, including holidays and weekends. This way, you can plan your schedule accordingly and assess the need to look for an alternative daycare during closures. Importantly, establish the daycare activity schedule especially meal time, nap time, and playtime. Such activities and their timing impact the child's development.

What Is the Meal Plan?

Meals and snacks are an integral component of daycare services. For starters, find out if the school provides meals or you will have to pack the food for your child. In case the daycare center offers food, assess the meal plan. In this case, establish how many meals are offered. Then, check out the menu and assess if it is nutritious enough. For instance, is the food low on fat? Do they offer whole or multi-grain products? Are fruits served? Then, determine the food preparation and handling process, including how the center handles allergies. This way, you have an assurance that your child gets adequate, appropriate, and nutritious food.

Hunting for an ideal daycare services center is involving but necessary. Ultimately, select a daycare center that reflects the quality of childcare your desire for your child.
